day 14 the Grand Canyon 29 oct 2011 Alex's 11th Birthday

We got up early to watch the sunrise over the grand canyon.

the grand canyon is a 277 mile long chasm created by erosion by the colorado river, wind rain and snow over the last 6 million years. the average depth is about 1 mile.

it's alex's 11th birthday - so pleased we were able to talk to mum and granny today.

we walked a section of the rim looking down to see the colorado river, a deep crevice marking a fault line and the oldest rock of the canyon.

fossils - crinoids

although small many of the trees are over 200 years old - they grow slowly as the ground is poor.

 sunset in the east

watched sunset before leaving for flagstaff. alex's cake was 6 yummy chocolate brownies with 11 candles in the car. we stayed the night in a Super 8 motel.

  2. It looks absolutely fantastic! Martha, you are a star reporter in the making! (We love the bit where it looks as if you jump into the Grand Canyon after doing your news report!) Alex, what a fantastic place to have your birthday... Jay: what on earth is a scorpion lolly, and why does it have legs? Nancy, Maddy wants to know if it was you doing the handstand in the pool with legs in the air but no body? Please blog again soon, to reassure us you haven't been eaten by one of those scary bears... lots of love, Alison
